What does it really take to build a home? And even more importantly… what does it take to build the life that lets you call that home your own?

Build Your Dream Home: From Trees to Keys, is an immersive STEM experience / field trip led by PulteGroup at Heartwood for seventh-grade STEM students from Richmond Hill Middle School.

For one day, students step outside the classroom and into the real world of homebuilding and land development — exploring everything that happens before a family ever gets the keys.

They discover how land becomes a neighborhood, how engineers, planners and designers help shape a community, and how builders take a home from an idea on paper to the place where someone will eventually live.

Along the way, students meet the people behind the process and discover just how many careers it takes to build a home and a community — framers, plumbers and electricians; architects, designers, engineers and land planners; marketers and sales professionals; mortgage lenders and finance teams; and so many more. They learn what these professionals actually do every day, the education and skills their jobs require, and yes… what they can expect to earn.

But there’s a twist. Throughout the day, every student is also designing their own dream home.

With each stop, they make choices, add features and start imagining what their future could look like. And by the end of the experience, they get to put it all together: the career they chose, the income that comes with it and the dream home they created.

Can their future paycheck afford their future dream? That’s when the math gets real.

Now in its third year, Build Your Dream Home is about more than houses. It’s about helping students connect what they’re learning today with the choices they’ll make tomorrow. Because before you can build your dream home, you have to start dreaming about the life you want to build.
